Funding for the project has been awarded to YPL by Youth Music as part of their Power Play scheme.

Youth Music is the leading UK charity using music to transform the lives of disadvantaged children and young people. Since 1999 they have reached over two million children and young people through all types of music, both in and out of school. Their vision is that through music making, any young person, regardless of their background, has opportunities to discover their creativity and fulfil their potential.

Youth Music identified Littleport as an area where young people would benefit from having increased musical opportunities. They were impressed by YPL’s commitment to the local community and were keen to support centre manager Phil Malkin with his vision of creating a music making space for local people.

Young people will be involved in helping shape the project and one of the lead figures is 18 year old Lorry Spry. Lorry has achieved bronze and silver Arts Awards, Youth Worker training, the V50 volunteering award and is technical advisor to Fenland Jam. He has been identified by Youth Music as an ideal candidate to help run the new facility. Lorry said:

“This is such an exciting project to be involved in. Fenland Jam was very popular with young people when we held sessions in Littleport a few years ago so it is great to return. The YPL music rooms will provide a long overdue home for Fenland Jam and I can’t wait for the sessions to start. For me this is a fantastic opportunity to fulfil my dream of developing a career in music production and technology.”

The transforming of the space will involve refurbishing and building work to create recording rooms, rehearsal space, kitchen, toilets and

The project is being managed by Nathan Jones of ADeC who siad: “Everyone is very excited about the YPL music rooms and we hope to see the space open in the Autumn. We would like to encourage as many people as possible from the Littleport community to be involved with the facility either as volunteer staff, musicians or tutors. We have already given a couple of groups tours of the space with more planned. Anyone who wishes to find out more can contact me at nathan.jones@adec.org.uk.”
