The YPL Music Rooms

The YPL Music Rooms is an exciting Music Project based at the YPL Centre in Littleport.  Phil Malkin, Manager for Young People Littleport, contacted Nathan Jones of ADeC about converting the disused upstairs space in their community centre, into a multi-purpose music facility for people of all ages to use.  After a successful application to Youth Music, funding was awarded to the project, which allowed work to begin.  After months of building work, and with a lot of help from volunteers & local musicians, the Music Rooms opened to the public in September 2011.  We are now a year into the project, which has been a huge success so far!

We run a range of workshops, including Band Coaching, Tech Q&A Sessions, Rap & Beat Box coaching and Mural painting workshops.  Alternatively, when the space is not in use for workshops, it can be hired for Rehearsals or Recording sessions, where all equipment is included.  Monthly Jam Nights, hosted by local community group Fenland Jam, are also held at the space, where people of any age, style and ability are welcome to get up and play.  There are also regular Showcase Gigs, where anyone who has participated in an activity at the YPL Music Rooms is invited to play a slot.  Musical instrument lessons are also offered, which currently include Guitar, Drums and Piano/Keyboard.

For more information about the services we offer, please download our current brochure.

Testimonials

I can’t believe the YPL Music Rooms have now been open a whole year – The time has gone so quickly! I’ve been really impressed with the original material which the young bands have been producing over the last year, and have thoroughly enjoyed recording them. I’ve also worked with some fantastic young vocalists, who have been recording to backing tracks in the Studio. A number of bands have been rehearsing at YPL, ranging from once a week, to one off, as well as local groups like the Fenland Jam Band. The Winning Words Rap Workshop was also a great success, especially when one of the raps was performed at the arrival of the Paralympics Torch to Ely! Meanwhile, others have been working on their Arts Award Qualification, or attending a Fenland Jam Night. The space is now looking much better than before, as pictures of the Showcase Gigs and recent projects are now starting to decorate the walls. We’re currently working on finishing off the Lesson Room (for instrument lesson) and the upstairs toilets. The next major job for me is to finish painting the really tall walls on the stairwell! I’m also working on a dedicated YPL Music Rooms Facebook page, which should be launching any minute now! Don’t forget to get in touch if you have any questions or would like to get involved in any activities at the YPL Music Rooms.
