Youth Arts
The YPL Music Rooms
Exciting news for Littleport musicians. Work has begun to convert the upstairs of the YPL (Young People Littleport) building in Granby St into a multi purpose music facility.
Working closely with ADeC (Arts Development in East Cambridgeshire) and local community music group Fenland Jam; the first floor of the building will be transformed into rooms for rehearsing, jamming, recording and lessons. It will also be a place where young people can socialise and work towards Arts Award qualifications.
The facility will also have sessions open to musicians of all ages and will be available to hire for those wishing to book extra time to rehearse or record.
Funding for the project has been awarded to YPL by Youth Music. Youth Music are the leading UK charity using music to transform the lives of young people by giving them opportunities to discover their creativity and fulfil their potential.
Youth Music identified Littleport as an area where young people would benefit from having increased musical opportunities. They were impressed by YPL’s commitment to the local community and keen to support centre manager Phil Malkin with his vision of creating a music making space for local people.
Young people will be involved in helping shape the project and one of the lead figures is 18 year old Lorry Spry. Lorry was identified by Youth Music as an ideal person to help with the new facility as he has achieved bronze and silver Arts Awards, Youth Worker training, the V50 volunteering award and is technical advisor to Fenland Jam.
Lorry said: “Fenland Jam was very popular when we held sessions in Littleport a few years ago so it is great to return. The YPL music rooms will provide a long overdue home for Fenland Jam and I can’t wait for the sessions to start. This is a fantastic opportunity to fulfil my dream of developing a career in music production and technology.”
The transforming of the space will involve refurbishment work to create recording rooms, rehearsal rooms, kitchen, toilets and meeting space. The rooms will be fully soundproofed and kitted out with equipment and instruments for young people to use.
The project is being managed by Nathan Jones of ADeC who said: “Everyone is very excited and we hope to see the space open in the autumn. We would like to encourage as many people as possible from the Littleport community to be involved; either as volunteer staff, musicians or tutors. Anyone who wishes to find out more can contact me at nathan.jones@adec.org.uk.”

Testimonials
“So what have I been up to? Lots of progress has been made since I first started planning the studio area. Firstly, I have helped to conduct several tours of the facility, explaining to everyone what each room is constructed, and what they will be used for. I’ve then modified my original plans, taking into account some of the suggestions that people have made, which have included moving the mixing position to the longest wall, making some changes to the flooring, and some mains wiring tweaks! I’ve looked at how we can make the space as secure as possible, and again there have been lots of useful suggestions! Phil and I have both been out on a trip to get quotes for the flooring, and we have had a meeting with an electrician about the lighting and power sockets. Currently, I am busy pricing up and designing the custom patch panels for the control and live rooms. YPL have kindly allowed me to use two large mixers that they have in storage, so I’m also adjusting the cabling and budgets with this in mind! I have also arranged the collection of two large office desks that have been kindly donated for use in the control room. Overall, everything is going really well, and I am looking forward to getting the studio up and running as quickly as possible!”
