Open Weekend launches the Cultural Olympiad in East Cambridgeshire: September 2008.

A flotilla of candle lit paper boats launched on the River Ouse saw the culmination of a series of events in Ely to launch the Cultural Olympiad Open Weekend.

ADeC, Arts Development in East Cambridgeshire organised a number of the cultural events which earlier in the week included a sell out performance of Heart of the Dragon, featuring traditional Chinese music and dance. On Saturday families enjoyed a free workshop at the Babylon, creating the bio-degradable paper boats, which were launched on Sunday evening following a procession from Ely Cathedral to Jubilee Gardens. The City of Ely Waits and Ely Sinfonia provided the musical accompaniment whilst the crowd were treated to a hot spicy apple drink. The weekend of arts events were funded through Cambridgeshire County Council. The Open Weekend marks the start of four years of cultural events throughout the UK leading up to London 2012. www.adec.org.uk
