Fakes & Forgeries: An Auctioneer’s Tale : David Palmer - Friday 22 July - Sunday 11 September
Spot the difference! What makes something a copy, a forgery - or a downright fake?
End of Exhibition Auction for any unsold work will take place on Sunday 11 September 3-4pm, free just turn up.
With generous sponsorship from Batemans Auctioneers & Valuers, Chris Mason independant financial advisor with ASL, Newnham Street Carpets
The Babylon Gallery will be showing one of its most unusual exhibitions to date when it plays host to the private collection of local auctioneer David Palmer. The exhibition opens on Friday 22 July and continues over the summer holidays to Sunday 11September. Over the years David has acquired a number of paintings, sculpture, and ephemera, some of which may be unsigned masterpieces or clever copies designed to fool the unwary collector. Each piece has a fascinating story to tell…
This exhibition will intrigue and amuse, and is sure to provoke discussion about the relationship between art and commerce and the way in which the art market manipulates and distorts our understanding of worth and value.
As a final twist, everything in the show is up for sale and David will hold a grand auction in the final week. Members of the public are invited to bring along their own ‘treasures’ to be assessed during two valuation days - who knows what may be lying undiscovered in your attic!
Fakes & Forgeries is being professionally curated by Juliet Chippindale, a recent MA graduate from The Courtauld Institute, London and is funded by the generous support of the a number of local businesses including Chris Mason from ASL independant financial advisors, Newnham Street Carpets and Bateman’s Auctioneers and Valuers who are offering a free valuation day when the public can bring along their own ‘treasures’ in on Tuesday 16 August (10am - 4pm).
Entry to the exhibition is Free, open Tuesday - Sunday 12 noon – 4pm. Please note the Gallery will be closed for an Arts Award Training event on Thursday 28 July, apologies in advance for any inconvenience.
