ADeC presents: The Heart of the Dragon

Bringing the beauty, vitality and culture of China to the stunning acoustic and performance space of Ely Cathedral’s Lady Chapel. Ely Cathedral.

The Heart of The Dragon gives you a taste of traditional Chinese performing arts, with a variety of music & dance. Performed by highly trained professional musicians and dancers. Traditional dances include the fan dance, the beautiful Peacock dance and the famous ribbon dance which dates back to the Tang dynasty in the early eighth century. Legend has it that Emperor Tang- Ming-Hwon once dreamed he was in the moon palace with many fairies singing and dancing in multicolored cloud-like long robes. The dance with flowing silk ribbons and accompanied by Chinese instruments- Erhu and Pipa is characterized by its refreshing and poetic mood.

The musicians will play ensemble and solo pieces on instruments including the Guzheng (the Chinese harp), the Yangqin (Chinese dulcimer) and the melancholic and expressive Erhu, a stringed instrument which creates and imitates sounds similar to human voice, birds and horses. Enjoy traditional tunes such as ‘Happiness’, ‘Yi Nation Dance’, and ‘Jasmine Flowers’ selected as the music played during the presentation of medals at the recent Beijing Olympics.
